In everyday life, we all experience small incidents or seemingly insignificant mistakes: forgetting an appointment, mixing up names, making a slip of the tongue, experiencing unexplained pain or having a strange dream. But what if some of these experiences were not entirely meaningless?

In my recent video, “The Unconscious & Inner Blocks,” which I had the pleasure of creating with Nancy Sinatra (@amouretc), we explore how the unconscious may express itself through everyday experiences. Rather than seeing every incident as a simple coincidence or mistake, psychoanalytic thinking invites us to consider whether some of them might reflect thoughts, emotions or inner conflicts that we are not fully aware of.

Freudian Slips and Everyday Mistakes: When the Unconscious Speaks

Forgetting an appointment, misplacing an object or confusing names can sometimes invite us to reflect on our feelings, inner resistance or unresolved conflicts.

Of course, many everyday mistakes are simply due to tiredness, distraction or chance. But paying attention to recurring patterns can sometimes offer valuable insights into how we think, feel and behave.

Slips of the Tongue: Words That Reveal More Than We Intended

A misplaced word, an unfinished sentence or an unexpected expression may sometimes reveal an underlying thought or emotion.

In psychoanalytic theory, these slips can be explored as possible expressions of unconscious processes. Reflecting on them may help us discover aspects of ourselves that we had not previously considered.

Somatisation: When Emotional Distress Affects the Body

Emotions and psychological stress can influence how we experience physical sensations. The relationship between mind and body is complex, and stress can sometimes contribute to physical discomfort.

However, unexplained pain or other physical symptoms should not automatically be attributed to emotional blocks. Medical assessment remains important when symptoms are new, persistent or concerning.

Listening to the body can be part of a broader process of self-awareness, alongside appropriate healthcare when needed.

Dreams: Exploring the Language of the Unconscious

Dreams have long held an important place in psychoanalytic thought.

Through images, symbols and sometimes surprising scenarios, dreams may offer opportunities to reflect on our memories, fears, desires and inner conflicts.

Their interpretation is personal and subjective. Exploring a dream is less about finding a universal hidden message than about understanding what its images and associations mean to the dreamer.

Why Paying Attention to These Experiences Matters

Freud's work highlighted the possible influence of unconscious processes on our thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

Our video, “The Unconscious & Inner Blocks,” invites you to look at everyday experiences from a different perspective: not as definitive evidence of hidden messages, but as opportunities for reflection and greater self-understanding.
