Dissociation or Dissonance (Energy Leaks): A Psychological Survival Mechanism

When an event is too violent, painful or sudden to be fully processed, the mind may activate different protective mechanisms. Dissociation is one of them. It can sometimes help a person temporarily distance themselves from an overwhelming experience.
In this video, I invite you to explore this phenomenon, its possible manifestations and ways of gradually restoring a sense of inner continuity.
What Is Dissociation?
Dissociation refers to a disruption in the usual integration of certain experiences, including consciousness, memory, emotions or one's sense of identity.
It can occur in traumatic situations, although its forms and causes vary.
Dissociation may manifest in several ways:
Feeling disconnected from yourself or your body.
Experiencing a sense of unreality, as though the world around you were distant.
Having unclear memories or difficulty recalling certain periods.
Feeling emotionally detached.
Experiencing a sense of unfamiliarity with yourself.
These experiences alone are not enough to establish a diagnosis.
When Dissociation Persists
A response that may serve a protective function in certain circumstances can sometimes become a source of difficulty when it persists.
A person may feel disconnected from their emotions, bodily sensations or personal history.
Some people may also experience relationship difficulties, feelings of disconnection or a loss of inner stability.
Appropriate professional support can help individuals better understand these experiences, restore a sense of safety and gradually develop personal resources.
When symptoms are significant or persistent, an assessment by a healthcare professional trained in dissociative disorders is recommended.
Dissociation and Energy Leaks: Another Perspective
Through my previous experience as a practitioner of magnetism and energy-based approaches, I developed a symbolic interpretation of certain experiences of inner disconnection, which I describe using the concept of "energy leaks."
In this personal framework, the feeling of fragmentation may be understood symbolically as a loss of coherence between different aspects of one's experience: the body, emotions and psychological life.
Pendulum work and Reiki were among the practices I explored within this approach.
However, it is important to distinguish this energy-based interpretation from scientific knowledge about dissociation. The existence of "energy leaks" as a physiological or psychological mechanism has not been scientifically demonstrated, and magnetism and Reiki have not been established as effective treatments for dissociative disorders.
This symbolic perspective is therefore not a substitute for diagnosis or appropriate professional care.
Restoring a Sense of Inner Unity
The journey towards greater self-understanding may involve several aspects:
Acknowledging personal experiences without judgment.
Recognising the protective role that certain reactions may have played.
Gradually identifying emotions and difficult situations.
Respecting one's own pace and personal boundaries.
Finding stability in the present and through supportive relationships.
The aim is not to erase the past, but to gradually find a place for it within one's personal story, without allowing it to define the present entirely.
